Florida Man 04:24
Well, I said goodbye to you a long time ago But I came back a half dozen times or so You really know just how to reel me in Even though you're a batshit comic book villain Oh, Florida, it's time for me to run You're killing me, in more ways than one I know I've done a dumb thing or nine I've never been one to toe the line It's not what I do I've misplayed But like the old PSA,  I learned it by watching you This was not the end goal when we walked on the moon You ought to know you are a damned cartoon You smell like Boone's Blue Hawaiian and Virginia Slims Your date to the prom was your toddler son, Colt Braeden Oh, Florida, won't you let me go? I can't take this circus, don't you know? I know I've done a dumb thing or nine I've never been one to toe the line It's not what I do I've misplayed But like the old PSA, I learned it by watching you You've got pyromania And plenty of hysteria You're chock full of kleptomania You ooze megalomania Weirder than Transylvania You're no Arcadia You could be a paradise if you'd just Open your heart and shut your face And stop being so proud to be a disgrace I know I've done a dumb thing or nine I've never been one to toe the line It's not what I do I've misplayed But just like the old PSA, I learned it by watching you

Tomorrow 03:42
I gotta draw the line I'm never gonna' pine for tomorrow 'Cause the day will never come We waste more than half our lives Under dark and dreary skies, trying to borrow From a bank that deals in lies and sorrow Pitching "thoughts and prayers" and "wishin' and hopin'" Time to open up your eyes Tomorrow is near But it never appears If you wait it's too late Don't shed a tear Today is always here Sunshine, so divine The bluebird is singing now She's trying to show you how to spread your wings How to know when love sets you free How to wake from your zombie trance and spring How to sing and take to the skies Tomorrow is near But it never appears If you wait it's too late Don't shed a tear Today is always here Sunshine, so divine Tomorrow is fine But today is sublime The time is nigh to fly high If you wait it's too late It's high time for sunshine

Lost & Found 03:52
Your crimson cap brings you Ugly orange pride You claim to love the red, white, and blue But your heart's black inside There's never gonna be a truce with you I learned my lesson last time 'round They'll always make a lame excuse for you But your soul is in the lost and found You held your nose up high ... But I just held my nose You even believed his crazy lies But, really, I suppose It's not a big surprise That your little mind was blown You were fooled by his disguise: A sheep in the big bad wolf's clothes I'd say you're brainwashed, but I must refrain For that to be, you'd have to have a brain There's never gonna be a truce with you I learned my lesson last time 'round They'll always make a lame excuse for you But your soul is in the lost and found

November 03:33
Cold sweats got me pacing Heart's pounding; I'm trembling Palpitating and racing, This is chasing off the good things I'm no longer solid But I don't know why or how I feel downright squalid Am I expiring right now? Is this physical? All I can do is guess Psychological? Well, I'm not quite sure Emotional? The answer is yes It is all of these and much more I'm feeling November I'm walking the streets at night I'm a burning ember And I'm in the Zone of Twilight I can't let this hurt me I don't want to feel the pain My heart may desert me But my mind and soul remain Is this physical? All I can do is guess Psychological? Well, I'm not quite sure Emotional? The answer is yes It is all of these and much more

You'll never know The power of your glow The smoothness of your flow As it stands, Time is long out of our hands ... Or so it seems We'll always have our dreams Where we are in between Lucidity And the holy trinity Of love, wine, and song A zillion stars can't be wrong They guide us through the long And winding stream Of semiconsciousness agleam Anywhere, any day In every single way One look can truly say Everything With the peace and calm it brings Our bodies will fail With time, we'll feel derailed But love and light prevail Our energy Has but one sure destiny: Intertwined are we Beyond physicality In planes we cannot see Abide we must For we all are but stardust Abide we must For we all are but stardust

What do we do with Elmo? He snuck into the White House - oh, no! His tantrums are utterly untoward And now he's the leader of the free world He's still wearing diapers at bedtime He only reads books if they rhyme He chows down on Happy Meals And if he doesn't like the prize, he squeals He blurts whatever dumb thing comes to mind Like any toddler Muppet, he's unrefined He uses both tiny hands to sip his drink It's possible that he's the missing link And we've been hoodwinked Now we're on the brink Of the end of humankind What do we do with Elmo? His tennis shoes all have Velcro His brain is in permanent slow-mo Should we let him engage publicly? Hell no! He gets his daily talking points from Fox Then he can have goldfish and a juice box It's hard for him to say words like Yosemite But he makes up cool words like Covfefe He's been around for a while, truth be told But somehow he's still 3 years old I'll never understand How he gets away with red hands He suggests disinfectant by injection And he's proud of high infections The truth can sometimes sting: Kids say the darnedest things

Mateo's Song 02:58
What would our family do Without the joy you bring? You light up the room with your mood You brighten up everything We once went through some hard times Before you were ever here But soon you arrived with your heart sublime The dark cloud then disappeared Each time that I hold your little hand I can feel your heart and your soul Every hug means the world and Every smile is as precious as gold I do my best to be present with you While I cherish the time that we have Soon you'll be taller than me, probably true And we'll have a beer and a laugh But right now you are still my little guy And I will fly with you into the blue Yes, for now you're my little fry And I sure do love you

On Paper 04:15
Two standard-size brown eyes One nose in center of face I'll tell myself these lies And put my mixed-up parts back into place Racing tracers Through varying degrees of sanity Losing reality And you are clear The walls are breathing now Every sound is echoed If I live through this somehow The seeds of light will be sowed Chasing moonbeams Facing down everything I've seen Oh, what does it all mean Right now? Sounds of grace are Enveloping me in ecstasy And in agony But now you're here In lovely glowing blue In elemental hues And all I want is you I wanted to tell you everything, everything This sullen tune, Alone in my room Save me, save me This lonely moon Asleep in my tomb Save me, save me Save me, take me Back to the place where I belong

Mo Collins 04:39
When we first learned her name It's not like we thought it was lame But it doesn't exactly go ... Sounds kinda' like an Irish boxer from the 1930s or so When we first saw her face Her jeans were elastic-waist She was rocking a big mom-fro And she made us LOL - oh, no - She made us ROFLMAO When we see Mo in a movie We really think it's groovy When we see her on a show We smile and shout, "There's Mo!" Oil painting is Mo's jam That's what I read about this badass madame On thefamouspeople.com While doing research for this song Bob Ross ain't got nothin' on Stuart's mom Mo's in a lot of stuff you've seen But maybe not Asian Bride magazine She's Lorraine and Joan Callamezzo But most of all, she's Mo! She often plays a meanie But I bet she's a sweetie In this thing called life I can't imagine Mo causing strife She deserves to get more lead parts But maybe producers are smart And they see what we see That Mo steals every goddamn scene When we see Mo in a movie We really think it's groovy When we see her on a show We smile and shout, "There's Mo!" Mo's in a lot of stuff you've seen But maybe not Sheep! magazine She's Lava and Rose Bonfiglio But most of all, she's Mo!

The stage is set No regrets The curtain is drawn The spotlight is on Thrills and chills! This is not a drill There is no trial run Are you having fun? This is your life Maybe you'll meet your sweet soul-mate Maybe you'll land your dream job today Maybe you'll go to Kathmandu Or maybe an anvil will flatten you Every day is a hypothetical Proposition, but you have some control There is no light without the dark This is your life - find your spark What if Kathmandu is just no good? What if the anvil is balsa wood? What if layoffs rain down from above? But now you have time to do what you love Every day is a hypothetical Proposition, but you have some control There is no light without the dark This is your life - go find your spark

about

THERE IS NO LIGHT WITHOUT THE DARK is the fourth full-length studio album by John Lathrop as The Stan Laurels and marks his debut on the Big Stir Records label.

Rex Broome, Co-Founder of Big Stir Records, has this to say about the album:

"THERE IS NO LIGHT WITHOUT THE DARK is a watershed follow-up to Lathrop's acclaimed and award-winning 2018 collection, MAYBE, that's sure to garner similar accolades: ambitious but accessible, its musical eclecticism is grounded in Lathrop's singular gift for melody and arrangement, and a strong thematic vision reflected by the record's title.

A musical and visual polymath who's responsible for all the songs, vocals, instrumental performances and even the striking art design that together embody The Stan Laurels' vision, Lathrop has reached a new peak on THERE IS NO LIGHT WITHOUT THE DARK. Featuring ten new original songs and a pair of instrumental interludes (John's also found success in film scoring), the record constitutes a further synthesis of influences as diverse as The Beatles, Breeders, Zombies, Kinks, Flaming Lips, Cars, Badfinger, Yes, They Might Be Giants, and Debussy into a big, lush, multi-layered sound that feels both vintage and modern.

That controlled collision of retro sounds and 21st century sensibility can be found in the playful modern lyrical references that include the sly deployment of online memes and tropes, as asides and even as the focus of the lead single, 'Florida Man' (which also happens to be partially autobiographical). There are also unmistakably current -- and scathingly humorous – takedowns of the departing POTUS on the giddily withering 'Red-Handed Puppet' and the more pointed (but still impeccably tuneful) 'Lost & Found.' There's even an ode to the titular comic character actress of 'Mo Collins' that's pure fannish fun.

If this joyful wordplay is part of the 'light' of the title, the other component is the tenderness that underpins a pair of odes to Lathrop's family. 'Of Love, Wine and Song,' written for John's wife, sees a prog-inspired 5/4 time signature take flight into shoegaze-adjacent realms of beauty. And the lovely waltz 'Mateo’s Song,' which truly deserves to be considered a modern lullaby, pays tribute to the singer-songwriter's young son.

As promised, and as to be expected for a record constructed during 2020, the 'dark' is addressed here as well: the closing 'This Is Your Life' ebbs and flows between lacerating guitars and sweeter idylls as it takes its stabs at the loudest complainers who are too often oblivious to how much better they have it compared to so many others. But the song offers hope for growth, as does the appropriately (and authentically) psychedelic 'On Paper,' which equates maturity and grace with emerging from a bad acid trip. 'November' is probably the most harrowing tune on offer, mirroring the onset of a panic attack with an unexpected tempo change (one of many arrestingly creative arrangement moments that dot the album). The dark and the light live side by side in these songs, and it may be on the beautiful, gliding 'Tomorrow' that they're best synthesized: Lathrop describes it as a self-motivational anthem, and it breezes in like a lost classic from the college rock airwaves of the '80s before crashing into a soaring '90s alt-rock chorus ... and still finds room for a tight, bouncy breakdown in the Cars or Weezer mold.

Lathrop's distinctive (and often stunningly gorgeous) voice brings the diverse influences on display together, and his playing – on the drums, keyboards, bass, and an array of jaw-dropping guitar arrangements – is always in service of the songs. And those songs, as varied as they are, support each other in their unflinching honesty, inventiveness, and ultimately, hope. 'There is no single blueprint for how a Stan Laurels record must sound,' John notes, and proves it here with a full collection of ups and downs, soft and heavy, mellow and loud, and - yes - light and dark, both musically and within the lyrical themes. Lathrop demurs that it's a cliché for an artist to claim his newest work is his best, so we shall do it for him: THERE IS NO LIGHT WITHOUT THE DARK is a major leap forward from an already accomplished and unique musical talent, and we at Big Stir Records can't wait to share it with you."

The Stan Laurels Austin

The Beatles, Breeders, Zombies, Kinks, Cars, and Debussy make up just some of the layers of the Warhol-esque sonic power-pop art painting that is The Stan Laurels, the musical creation of earthling Sound Scientist John Lathrop of Austin, TX, USA.
