about

I had written a song called "Birth of the Sun" for my older son, Miguel, on my first album in 2009, but went two records without writing one for my younger son, Mateo. It was time. The year before Mateo was born, my wife's father passed away. We were all very close to him and he was truly an amazing man. It was beyond devastating. So when Mateo arrived, it was a most celebratory experience that we all needed; and Mateo has turned out to be very similar to my late father-in-law in many ways, not the least of which is his huge, loving heart ... so I tried to make a song sweet enough to convey this. Musically, this one features lots of major 7th chords (but then again, what song of mine doesn't?); it's certainly my favorite family of chords. "Mateo's Song" is the softest on the album, aside from the two instrumentals, which is fitting, since Mateo himself is quite mellow and sweet. The lyrical melody during the verses comes from something I made up on the spot and hummed to Mateo when he was about 3 years old; he loved it and asked me to keep singing it, so I recorded it with a portable recorder so I would never forget the moment (or the tune). I didn't know 5 years later I would be writing a full song for Mateo and utilizing that very melody.

lyrics

What would our family do
Without the joy you bring?
You light up the room with your mood
You brighten up everything

We once went through some hard times
Before you were ever here
But soon you arrived with your heart sublime
The dark cloud then disappeared

Each time that I hold your little hand
I can feel your heart and your soul
Every hug means the world and
Every smile is as precious as gold

I do my best to be present with you
While I cherish the time that we have
Soon you'll be taller than me, probably true
And we'll have a beer and a laugh
But right now you are still my little guy
And I will fly with you into the blue
Yes, for now you're my little fry
And I sure do love you

The Stan Laurels Austin

The Beatles, Breeders, Zombies, Kinks, Cars, and Debussy make up just some of the layers of the Warhol-esque sonic power-pop art painting that is The Stan Laurels, the musical creation of earthling Sound Scientist John Lathrop of Austin, TX, USA.
