about

"Mo Collins" is about ... Mo Collins. You know, the comedic actress. Mad TV, Parks & Rec, Fear the Walking Dead, etc. My wife and I just love her and she does seem to steal every scene she's in (as I mention in the lyrics). I always wonder why more people don't write songs about some of our most talented current performers. Everyone writes songs about icons like Marilyn or James Dean, but what about the Mos of the world? Largely ignored in pop music. I am doing my part to rectify this. Musically, this all stemmed from the chorus, which is quite heavily Billy Joel-influenced (I'm a big fan of his late '70s stuff); I just love double-time piano chords played on the right hand while a distorted guitar plays single bass notes, a la Joel's "Zanzibar." Then I added the verses with (of course) more tightly wound crunchy staccato chords, this time in a descending pattern, which is another thing (along with ascending patterns) I'm always a sucker for in music. The staccato guitar chord influence comes from many places, but two I can easily pinpoint are The Kinks and They Might Be Giants, who did it all the damned time. I love it, I'm addicted, and I don't think I'm gonna quit anytime soon (sorry).

lyrics

When we first learned her name
It's not like we thought it was lame
But it doesn't exactly go ...
Sounds kinda' like an Irish boxer from the 1930s or so

When we first saw her face
Her jeans were elastic-waist
She was rocking a big mom-fro
And she made us LOL - oh, no -
She made us ROFLMAO

When we see Mo in a movie
We really think it's groovy
When we see her on a show
We smile and shout, "There's Mo!"

Oil painting is Mo's jam
That's what I read about this badass madame
On thefamouspeople.com
While doing research for this song
Bob Ross ain't got nothin' on Stuart's mom

Mo's in a lot of stuff you've seen
But maybe not Asian Bride magazine
She's Lorraine and Joan Callamezzo
But most of all, she's Mo!

She often plays a meanie
But I bet she's a sweetie
In this thing called life
I can't imagine Mo causing strife

She deserves to get more lead parts
But maybe producers are smart
And they see what we see
That Mo steals every goddamn scene

When we see Mo in a movie
We really think it's groovy
When we see her on a show
We smile and shout, "There's Mo!"

Mo's in a lot of stuff you've seen
But maybe not Sheep! magazine
She's Lava and Rose Bonfiglio
But most of all, she's Mo!

The Stan Laurels Austin

The Beatles, Breeders, Zombies, Kinks, Cars, and Debussy make up just some of the layers of the Warhol-esque sonic power-pop art painting that is The Stan Laurels, the musical creation of earthling Sound Scientist John Lathrop of Austin, TX, USA.
