Of Love, Wine, and Song

from There is No Light Without the Dark by The Stan Laurels

about

"Of Love, Wine, and Song" is, quite simply and directly, a love poem to my beautiful and amazing wife, Elvira; the lyrics themselves hopefully tell the story better than any attempt to explain them would be. Musically, this song has been knocking around for about a decade and never made it onto an album until now. I adore it because I indulged myself to get my "prog" on just a little, between the odd 5/4 time signature, the rhythmic syncopation, the unique melody in guitar harmony (or guitarmony, as I call it) during the instrumental middle section, and by not following any basic standard song structure. There are hints of progressive rock hidden in all of my albums betwixt the power-pop, rock, and folk, but this is maybe the most obvious nod. And it was inevitable, considering I grew up on Yes, Rush, and King Crimson, among many other prog heroes!

lyrics

You'll never know
The power of your glow
The smoothness of your flow
As it stands,
Time is long out of our hands ...
Or so it seems
We'll always have our dreams
Where we are in between
Lucidity
And the holy trinity
Of love, wine, and song
A zillion stars can't be wrong
They guide us through the long
And winding stream
Of semiconsciousness agleam

Anywhere, any day
In every single way
One look can truly say
Everything
With the peace and calm it brings
Our bodies will fail
With time, we'll feel derailed
But love and light prevail
Our energy
Has but one sure destiny:
Intertwined are we
Beyond physicality
In planes we cannot see
Abide we must
For we all are but stardust
Abide we must
For we all are but stardust

The Beatles, Breeders, Zombies, Kinks, Cars, and Debussy make up just some of the layers of the Warhol-esque sonic power-pop art painting that is The Stan Laurels, the musical creation of earthling Sound Scientist John Lathrop of Austin, TX, USA.
