Talk about light and dark ... "This is Your Life" is another attempt at a sort of motivational song (but again, probably mostly to myself, as I certainly need it). It's basically saying, "Stop complaining!" Life is hard for everyone - some MUCH more than others, and it's often the least difficult for those who are the loudest complainers. And it's also a plea to stop worrying all the time about every little bad thing that might happen in life. It's a yin-yang thing ... life is good at times and it's bad at times. It's happy sometimes and it's sad other times. But the important thing to note is There is No Light Without the Dark. We need the bad to really appreciate the good. Life is unpredictable. You never know what's going to happen ... could be something amazing or horrible. Hell, it could be something that seems awful at the time, but ends up being wonderful. Point is, worrying about every possible outcome is helping no one, least of all yourself. Sure, the theme is pandemic-related in a way, but it applies to all life situations. This is your life, for better or worse ... so make the most of it and all that jazz, ya' know? The music completely mirrors the lyrical theme of this song (and ultimately, the entire record). There's heaviness and lightness, crunchy and sweet, hard and mellow. I made a point to challenge myself with the songwriting and arranging on this song (and the album) to find a way to make opposing forces not only not sound completely crazy next to each other, but in fact to work together in melodic harmony. And that's what we all need to do in so many ways, and in many facets of life.
