about

"Tomorrow" is a motivational song ... to myself. It's an attempt to push myself to never stay static, to get off my ass and create. But really, it can apply to anyone with a creative tendency of any kind, to stop dreaming and do the work. And do it today, not tomorrow. I've always been a musician and visual artist, but like anyone else, I've done my share of procrastinating. I've gone long stretches - sometimes years - of being completely unproductive creatively. My thought was that I would get to it tomorrow ... turned out in many cases, "tomorrow" really meant never. Creating any kind of art is fun, but it can also be draining and very hard work; and I was clearly avoiding it. But I've found as time goes by that no matter how hard it is, it's always better and more rewarding to create something than to do nothing. And I've also learned that tomorrow never really arrives; but today is always here. What I like about this song, musically, is that when the listener expects a second chorus, I instead take a sudden left turn with a stop and then a heavy power chord build with a syrupy synth on top that utilizes a variation of the chorus melody. I love the effect of using different chord patterns underneath a static melody because these chord changes can totally transform how the melody sounds; one of my biggest influences, Superdrag, does that a lot. And I also love building from the most bare-bones duet of one palm-muted guitar with one simple synth melody to adding more instruments over the course of several measures, finally changing the swing of the beat, and building up to a big crescendo that takes us right into a break before the final chorus.

lyrics

I gotta draw the line
I'm never gonna' pine for tomorrow
'Cause the day will never come
We waste more than half our lives
Under dark and dreary skies, trying to borrow
From a bank that deals in lies and sorrow
Pitching "thoughts and prayers" and "wishin' and hopin'"
Time to open up your eyes

Tomorrow is near
But it never appears
If you wait it's too late
Don't shed a tear
Today is always here
Sunshine, so divine

The bluebird is singing now
She's trying to show you how to spread your wings
How to know when love sets you free
How to wake from your zombie trance and spring
How to sing and take to the skies

Tomorrow is near
But it never appears
If you wait it's too late
Don't shed a tear
Today is always here
Sunshine, so divine
Tomorrow is fine
But today is sublime
The time is nigh to fly high
If you wait it's too late
It's high time for sunshine

The Beatles, Breeders, Zombies, Kinks, Cars, and Debussy make up just some of the layers of the Warhol-esque sonic power-pop art painting that is The Stan Laurels, the musical creation of earthling Sound Scientist John Lathrop of Austin, TX, USA.
